During times of extra stress (**I’m lookin’ at you Rona**), it’s likely that you are producing an increase in stress hormone cortisol, which means our sex hormones and important events like ovulation can take a hit and throw periods out of whack.

This increase in cortisol also decreases sex hormone progesterone which can potentially bring on an earlier period, but also, when the hormonal ratio of estrogen is higher than progesterone it’s what causes those pesky PMS to show face…

Cue an increase in:

  • Cramps
  • Mood swings + irritability
  • Intense cravings
  • Migraines
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Bloating
  • Breakouts
  • Disrupted sleep… the list goes on.

It is annoying, I hear you. But, it’s actually our body’s genius way of prioritising your survival, protecting you from the perceived current danger, deciding that it’s not a safe time to be ovulating or bringing a baby into the world and so it puts it all on pause. 

This can be okay for a short period of time, your body is resilient and with the right support your PMS can subside within a few cycles. However, if you remain in a stressed state for a prolonged period of time, you may experience missing or irregular periods, infertility, no libido, mood disorders, thyroid dysfunction and weight challenges which are more challenging and take more time to heal. 

Nevertheless, this blog isn’t to stress you out about not stressing out!

So, how to support your body? 

Before I dive into some of my FAVOURITE adaptogens and herbs that provide incredible support for your adrenal function and stress response, we must start by looking at the essential lifestyle foundations. 

Why? Because you cannot out supplement poor lifestyle habits. 

For example, no supplement is going to make up for not sleeping, over working, skipping meals or diets high in sugar and processed foods. 

To really support your body, you need to be aiming for at least 7-8 hours of quality sleep, taking time for self-care, eating a nutrient dense wholefoods diet, making time for movement daily and even trying to commit to a practice such as meditation, earthing, breathwork, yoga, tapping etc. This may sound like a lot, but this is the time to upgrade your daily practices to reduce stress levels during this time of COVID-19 so that we can come out the other end strong and thriving.
