There is an abundance of benefits when it comes to using natural, dry clay masks as part of your skincare routine. Not only The benefits of using a clay mask are:
Why is using a dry clay mask better than a wet or creamy face mask? Most store bought face masks that have a creamy or wet texture contain toxic preservative ingredients that increase the products shelf life, and for some are more appealing to the customer as the mask is already made up and you don’t have to worry about blending it yourself.
- Clay masks help to fight acne and blemishes
- Clay masks help to decrease the appearance of pores
- Clay masks detox impurities, rejuvenate and clear your skin
- Clay masks absorb excess oil and regulate oil production
How do clay masks work?
Clay is naturally made up of negatively charged minerals which gives clay the power to remove toxins, bacteria, and heavy metals from the skin whilst also leaving behind the good kind of nutrients and minerals that are nourishing for your skin! When the clay dries on your skin it also absorbs dirt, dead skin cells and excess oils.
Most clays are found in mineral clay deposits on or just below the earth’s surface. Each type of clay has its own mineral content which is why there are different types with different benefits.
At My Moonbox we love a good clay face mask – particularly one made from pink clay which is why we created our very own Moon Clay face mask.
What’s so special about pink clay?
Firstly it doesn’t discriminate – it’s great for all skin types – the dry, oily, sensitive and combination skin. It’s most well known for being gentle (which is why the sensitive love it) whilst also being rich in silica which improves cell renewal, and provides anti-aging and brightening benefits. Unlike other clays, pink clay does not stripp off the natural oil barrier in the skin.
Why do we sell our clay in dry powder form?
Because it’s not only better for your skin but long-term health and hormones as well. In short, clay is hard to preserve – when you add water to dry powdered clay it will start to form bacteria within a week.
So when you buy a clay face mask that has that desirable smooth, whipped and creamy texture it has had a heavy load of synthetic preservatives added to it so that it has a long shelf life and doesn’t form bacteria – however when you use the mask its those toxic preservatives that are also penetrating your skin and ending up in your bloodstream. Read this blog on how toxic ingredients like preservatives can be known as xenoestrogens and mess with your hormones, causing period problems and making you more susceptible to certain cancers.
The other reason we sell Moon Clay in powdered form is because the dry ingredients remain just as effective from the first time you use the product until the last scoop out of the jar. Versus when a wet, whipped mask is stored in a jar, it becomes less active over time meaning it loses its effectiveness as well.
When it comes to clay masks and using Moon Clay there are definitely common questions on how to use clay masks and important do’s and don’ts in order to get the best results. So let’s go over these below!
How to mix Moon Clay?
Get your tools together:
- Bamboo bowl
- Bamboo spatula
- Face brush
- Moon Clay
Important note: when mixing clay with water, never use metal spoons or bowls as they will react with the clay reducing most of its healing properties – this is why we provide you with bamboo tools.
Step 1: Start with approx 2-3 heaped spatulas of Moon Clay into your bowl.
Step 2: Slowly add ½ teaspoon of warm water (filtered is best) and mix with your spatula. Add more water or clay as needed until you get a smooth clay paste consistency – not too thin or watery, not to thick & clumpy. If you have any acne or spots add 1 drop of Moon Shine Blemish Oil to help fight blemishes.
If you mix too much clay, that’s ok! Seal in an airtight container and store in your refrigerator to use another time. You can safely store your clay for 3 days.
How to Apply Moon Clay?
Step 3: Always start with a cleansed face! (Our favourite all natural cleanser is here)
Step 4: Using your brush, apply the mask to your skin. Apply first a thin layer of product to your face and neck, then if desired apply a second thicker layer so the mask is approx 1/8″ thick.
How long to keep the mask on for?
Important: We know it’s satisfying to watch a clay mask harden up & the tightening feels so good! But this is a big No No!
DO THIS: Remove the mask just as it gets sticky/tacky and you start to see some spots lightening in colour. Do not, I repeat do not, let it fully dry or crack or it will suck moisture & natural oils out of your skin. Removal should be after approximately 4-10 minutes depending on the thickness you applied.
Rule of Thumb: always remove the face mask before it dries!
How to remove the face mask?
Step 5: There are 3 techniques to remove your pink clay face mask:
- We recommend using an organic konjac sponge like the one in our Reusable Skincare Kit. It makes for easy removal and gives the extra benefit of gentle exfoliation whilst massaging the mask off your skin.
- You can use a warm, damp face cloth. To avoid harshly rubbing the mask off – Apply the warm towel to the skin for about 10 seconds and then wipe off.
- Just use warm water with clean hands.
What to apply after the face mask?
What you do after your face mask is just as important as the mask itself to ensure you are maximising its potential.
Don’t forget to tone & hydrate your skin!
Step 6: We recommend toning with 100% natural & organic Moon Mist – a toner balances out the pH of your skin, soothes and purifies pores.
Step 7: Hydrate with Moon Dew facial oil – doing a mask sucks out all of the oil from your skin, now you need to give some back! Without properly hydrating, your skin can dry out, become irritated and make you more susceptible to wrinkles! Hydration is a must-do step!
Is redness normal after the face mask?
Yes it can be common to experience redness as the clay mask draws extra blood to the surface of the skin bringing in more nutrients whilst also flushing out damaged cells to promote healing. You may feel redness and tightness in your skin for up to 30 minutes after application.
However if you left your mask on for too long to the point it was dry and crackly this will cause more redness! But not to worry – your skin will replace its natural oils, and you can help it out with Moon Dew or a natural moisturiser.
How often should I use a face mask like Moon Clay?
The answer to this question depends on your skin type!
If you have oily skin, a clay mask is amazing at helping to prevent excessive oil, acne and enlarging of your pores! We recommend using a clay mask 2-3 times a week.
If you have dry skin, using a pink clay or Moon Clay mask once per week, maximum 2 weeks is incredibly beneficial to help keep your skin clear from blackheads and pimples.
If you have normal to combination skin, we recommend using your clay mask twice a week for most benefits!
When is the best time to do a clay mask? Before or after a shower?
The best time to do a clay mask is in the evening, after cleansing your face and before applying any other skincare products. Having a warm shower helps dilate blood vessels on your skin and makes the skin more permeable and open to products you use on your face – so doing a clay mask after you shower is a great time to maximise absorption of the nutrients and minerals. The heat from the shower also loosens up dirt and sebum in your pore which will clear away more easily with your mask post shower.
