I know COVID-19 is front of mind right now and with all the uncertainties it brings it can be a worrying time. At Moonbox, we are consciously choosing to focus on the positives that can be found within the current circumstances. Instead of fearing the possible impact on our small business, we are looking at ways in which we can improve Moonbox and how we can better support our community and the world as best we can right now.
The immune system is of huge focus at the moment (and rightfully so!!) and the good news is that whilst you’re taking action to enhance your immunity, it’s also having a knock on effect in supporting your hormonal system too. Remember, all systems in the body are connected, so these tips that I’m about to give you that support your hormones are going to be supporting your immunity right back so it’s a win-win!
5 Top Tips to Support Your Hormones & Period Health
(which are always beneficial, not just in times of a pandemic)
1. Manage your stress levels.
I know it’s easier said than done to say, “reduce your stress levels” right now. But my intention is to plant a seed of awareness as to how stress not only suppresses your immune system but also your hormonal system too. Stress triggers an increase in cortisol which triggers a chain reaction of events in the body that disrupt ovulation and send an overarching message to the body that it’s not a safe time to nourish a pregnancy. This in turn can manifest as late or missing periods, an increase in cramps, PMS and infertility.
So it really is important to take your self-care extra seriously during this time, become aware of your main stress triggers and what you’re allowing to enter your field. For example, if social media is stressing you out, perhaps it’s time to disconnect! Consuming media that is based around fear and panic is not helpful. Instead, can you spend this time focusing on what really matters most to you right now, like connecting with a loved one? Or reconnecting with yourself? Starting a new project? Taking action to improve your health? Or just embracing the art of doing nothing and being okay with doing nothing?! Where your attention goes, energy flows! So shifting your focus onto the positive things in your life can foster big shifts in your energy and reduction in stress. Amidst chaos, use the tools that you know work for you, whether it’s meditation, breath work, tapping, yoga, dance, affirmations, essential oils etc.
Trust me, in a few menstrual cycles time your periods will be thanking you for it!
2. Soak up the sunshine vitamin D!
I always talk on my Instagram @mymoonbox about the importance of soaking up 20 minutes of sunshine vitamin D daily. It’s not only essential for hormone production and regulation of moods but also regulating your immune system.
I know many of us are in isolation right now so exposing yourself to sunshine may be more difficult. But, if you have a balcony or courtyard, take your work or eat your lunch outside or sit by an open window!
On days you don’t have exposure to the sun, looking into a quality Vitamin D3 supplement can be of great benefit.
3. Check-in with where you are in your menstrual cycle!
Every morning when I wake up, I take note of where I am in my cycle and how I’m feeling. From there, I decide how I’m going to best show up for myself on that particular day.
Now, the average person spends their day at work, most likely placing high expectations on themselves to perform at the same level of productivity/energy/motivation every single day, regardless of where they are in their cycle – menstruating or not. If you are working from home right now, one of the positives is having the space to really honour where you’re at in your menstrual cycle. For example, if you’re menstruating, use this as the perfect time to slow down, rest more, have long baths, go to bed earlier, sleep in etc. Become more aware of what your body is communicating with you and instead of pushing yourself, honour yourself – do this and you’ll find that you have more energy, balanced moods and vitality throughout the rest of your cycle.
4. Eat hormone nourishing foods!
The food you eat is either going to be working for your hormones, or working against your hormones. During times of stress and anxiety I know there is the urge to constantly snack on sugary foods which give you a temporary boost in mood and energy, but this can actually lead to blood sugar imbalance, poor sleep quality and hormone dysregulation. Sugary, processed, fatty, fried, white and packaged foods cause PMS and also suppress our immune system, so focusing on nutrient dense whole foods is always important.
- Eat quality protein with every meal to keep you satiated and your blood sugar levels balanced. We need the amino acids in protein to make hormones and form neurotransmitters! Organic chicken, eggs, beef, lamb, wild caught fish are all great options.
- Eat veggies with every meal filling at least half of your plate up with greens. Broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts, cabbage all help with the metabolism of estrogen and in turn prevent symptoms of PMS. Veggies contain vitamins and minerals like magnesium, vitamin Bs, vitamin C and zinc which are necessary for making neurotransmitters and boosting immunity.
- Eat 2 tbsp of healthy fats with every meal to help make healthy hormones. Moonbox Earth Seeds, avocado, sardines, coconut oil, olive oil, nuts, ghee, butter, nut butters etc.

5. Support yourself with extra herbs, spices and medicinal mushrooms!
Inflammation is a root cause of all hormonal conditions, period problems and weakens our immune system. Powerful anti-inflammatory immune boosting herbs and spices to add to your cooking now and always are:
- Black pepper
Instead of placing extra strain on your adrenals with caffeine at the moment, drinking antioxidant rich cacao (like Luna’s Lover) or nourishing turmeric elixirs like Luna’s Gold are excellent. Turmeric works as an amazing anti-inflammatory preventing period pain but also works to inhibit virus entry into cells. I personally consume Superfeast mushroom extracts and tonics daily (they are also in all of Moonbox Elixir blends) but at the moment I have increased my use for extra support focusing on Jing for my adrenals and Qi and Reishi for my immunity and vitality. Other medicinal mushrooms like Chaga, Cordyceps, Lions Mane, Maitake and Turkey Tail have scientific research indicating their immune benefits as well. Schizandra is also one of my favourite chinese herbs for supporting your reproductive system but is also well-known for enhancing immunity (it’s a star ingredient in Luna’s Gold Elixir). You can use the code MOONBOX for a cheeky discount on all Superfeast blends,
It’s the simple foundations of health that make the greatest difference to your hormones and immune function and now more than ever getting restful sleep should be at the top of your priority list!!
A few tips:
- Aim to be asleep by 10pm.
- Avoid looking at screens in your bedroom as it decreases melatonin (sleep hormone) production. Check out blue light blocking glasses.
- Avoid eating a few hours before bed
- Make your room as dark as possible so your body senses it’s time for sleep. (Moonbox subscribers wear your Moon Masks!)
- Spray Magnesium oil onto the bottom of your feet to take your sleep to the next level!! My fave Magnesium oil is here.
My intention of this blog is to empower you to take control of your health now, rather than waiting to make changes when you start experiencing symptoms – whether it be period problems, corona virus or otherwise.
I encourage you to ask yourself, “what has this pandemic revealed for you?” …have you taken the time to reassess where your priorities lie? Has it taken this pandemic for you to want to improve your health and quality of life in the future?
It is apparent that nature is trying to communicate with us, that we need to pause, be more present and to better take care of ourselves and each other. Remember we always have the power to determine how we respond to any situation, so how are you choosing to respond?
The world needs healing right now but I believe that for this to be achieved, the healing starts with ourselves. And it’s these foundations of health covered above, that when done consistently over time, are what deliver lasting health and wellbeing. Health isn’t a 4 week challenge or 10 day detox, it’s an everyday life-long project and partnership with your body.
I hope this blog has helped guide you in someway and if you need extra support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via @mymoonbox, I’m happy to support in any way that I can, we are all in this together.
Stay safe, stay healthy and try to keep those vibes high 🙂
